New York state attorney general has introduced a new digital platform urging locals to share visual evidence of ICE operations throughout New York. This action comes just a shortly after a major ICE raid disrupted Chinatown in Manhattan, prompting mass protests.
A lawmaker disclosed during a midweek briefing that four US citizens were taken into custody and kept for "about 24 hours" after the enforcement action. Protests broke out in New York on consecutive evenings.
"Each citizen is entitled to exist without intimidation," the attorney general declared in a statement.
"If you witnessed and documented ICE activity recently, I encourage you to submit that footage with the authorities. We are committed to reviewing these accounts and determining any wrongdoings."
The portal provides spaces to submit visual evidence of the operation, along with a field to note where it occurred. Prior to sending, individuals must mark a box that states that "authorities may use any evidence provided in a legal proceeding, such as in a lawsuit or government document."
The Manhattan operation, which witnesses say featured over fifty ICE personnel, happened in a popular district of the city where imitation purses, items, goods and other goods are commonly traded en masse – frequently to tourists.
Footage of the incident show numerous masked and armed federal agents securing and holding a man, and shoving away onlookers. Masses of New Yorkers followed the personnel down the sidewalks. An military-style transport was observed traveling down the Manhattan avenues.
During a midweek briefing featuring the rights organization, the congressman, a Democrat, announced that four US citizens were arrested by immigration for about 24 hours and that there were "no situations where US citizens should be detained for no reason." He clarified the persons were freed on the following day with no accusations made.
"There's a clear purpose here. It is not focused on deporting lawbreakers," he stated. "This is a military-style operation to incite tension. It is simply a pretext to provoke conflict for federal officials to bring in the armed forces to stop unrest that they initiated."
Anger over the immigration operation rapidly grew – each of the political contenders criticized the operation, as did the state leader.
"Once again, the Trump administration chooses heavy-handed tactics that generate terror, rather than security. It needs to cease," a contender wrote.
New York City advocacy organizations expressed outrage also.
"Federal officers raided Chinatown in NYC with military-style vehicles, hooded officers and tactical gear to target small merchants attempting to earn income. This action had nothing to do with community security and focused completely on intimidating residents and neighborhoods," remarked the leader of a major immigrant coalition.
Official guidelines forbids the detention of US citizens and the bureau has said it does not take into custody US citizens. Nevertheless, external research has discovered that over 170 citizens have been held against their will by federal agents since the start of the present government.
Immigration operations have been cropping up increasingly in NY and nationwide this year.
A mid-October raid in midtown Manhattan was the earliest reported action on an housing center of the existing leadership. Demonstrations against ICE are widespread as are accusations of force and cruel conditions.
Recently, a letter filed by advocacy organizations claimed healthcare failures of women with child in detention centers.
