NYC's incoming mayor, Zohran Mamdani, has confirmed to take up residence in the traditional Gracie Mansion, departing from his rent-controlled apartment that became a focal point during his election bid.
Dating back to 1799, Gracie Mansion has been the mayoral home for the majority of New York City mayors after the World War II era.
Yet, Mamdani, for whom rent control is a central platform, did not confirm he would live there promptly following his electoral win in November.
"My choice was based on keeping my family safe and the imperative to focusing my full attention on implementing the agenda for affordability New Yorkers elected me on," the Mayor-Elect declared on Monday.
His home was in Astoria, Queens, a community famous for its abundance of immigrant populations and global cuisine.
"To the people of Astoria: my gratitude for showing us what is great about New York City," Mamdani's statement said.
"Even though I'm moving in Astoria, the community will continue to reside a part of me and my efforts as mayor," he added.
Throughout his election campaign, Mamdani connected his key pledge – to freeze the rent – to his own housing situation.
Yet his rivals, including former New York Governor Andrew Cuomo, attacked Mamdani for occupying the apartment although he came from a famous family.
Some mayors have opted to reside at Gracie Mansion.
Michael Bloomberg, the billionaire entrepreneur, chose to live in his personal mansion on Manhattan's Upper East Side throughout his three terms, which ended in 2012.
Instead, Bloomberg said he believed it could serve as a venue for public city functions, and pushed for a major refurbishment of the historic mansion.
Upon taking up residence at Gracie Mansion for his first day on 1 January, he will be surrounded by surroundings a stark contrast to his modest Astoria home.
With its butter yellow paint, forest green window covers, and pristine railings, Gracie Mansion is a wedding cake of a house situated by the East River.
Inside, the first floor of the Federal-style mansion is furnished in the spirit of the home's historical period.
The compound, which allegedly has five bedrooms, also has increased security measures to secure the mayor and his family.
Some residents have alleged that Gracie Mansion also has spiritual residents.
Chirlane McCray, the partner of previous mayor Bill De Blasio, told reporters that doors occasionally opened and shutting on their own, and the floorboards made strange noises.
The departing mayor Eric Adams was even more convinced. "I don't care the skeptics say," he stated in 2022. "The place is haunted in there, man."
The apartment he is leaving is rent stabilised, a policy where the city sets limits on how much building managers can increase rent each year.
City residents see such units as crucial resources as the price of rent rises faster than the means of many residents.
It was reported Mamdani his rent was $2,300 each month for his apartment.
Per figures from real estate analysts Zillow, the median rent for a one-bedroom apartment in New York City is $3,500 a month.
