The Showrunner Shares He Has an Idea of How Pluribus Will Conclude... At the Moment.

The acclaimed writer-producer never anticipated that his new science-fiction series would emerge as a breakout success. “I am so grateful to the audience,” Gilligan says. “I was surprised by the show being as widely discussed as it is, and it makes me deliriously happy.”

As the debut season of the acclaimed series coming to an end—and Season 2 officially in the works—the writers' room reflected on the audience reaction and whether it will shape the storyline of Pluribus.

About the Incredible Viewer Reception

One could easily to get swayed by the rampant praise and fan theories surrounding Pluribus. Gilligan, however, is doing his best to avoid both.

“The experience is akin to constantly eating something incredibly sweet and being tickled to death,” he says. “It's amazing, but I learn of it from others, and that's intentional. I have never Googled myself, nor do I ever plan to. It's not a lack of interest. It's a rabbit hole I know I would disappear down and then I'd be never leaving the house from Home Depot and I'd rarely emerge from my living room.”

Regardless of trying to stay away, there’s no escaping the overwhelmingly positive response to the series. The most practical strategy is to accept it graciously and try not to let it alter the course of the show.

“We make no attempt to change the plot,” says writer and executive producer Alison Tatlock. “Our storytelling is not impacted by online forums.”

“We prefer to keep our focus on the work,” Gilligan concludes.

The Big Question: Has Vince Gilligan Know the Finale of Pluribus?

Given that the writers are not listening by audience theories, can we assume they have mapped out how Pluribus will reach its endpoint? In short yes… in a way.

“We have some interesting ideas about where the show might end up,” Gilligan reveals. “however, we remain prepared to abandon a decent plan for a superior concept. This approach has served us in good stead on Better Call Saul and on Breaking Bad even before that. We throw stuff out when we get a better idea and I imagine we will be doing that.”

On the other hand, if plans fall through, executive producer Gordon Smith has a pretty funny idea to serve as a last resort.

“I keep pitching that everything takes place within a snow globe, and that we'll zoom out in the finale and we're in there,” Smith quips, “though the idea hasn't gained traction.”

Then again, why not reference the iconic TV endings?

“My dream is Carol to open her eyes next to Bob Newhart,” he jokes.

Pluribus can be watched on the streaming service.
