Alright, how did you experience the past year in your home? Was it all as good as people post on Facebook? Full of top marks for the children and riotous themed fancy dress birthday parties for the grownups? Or was it a ocean of frustration with only rare enjoyable highlights? Could any part be actually real, or are we all digitally altered virtual entities with celebrity teeth?
I've corralled my thoughts together, whether they wanted to or not, to debate the crucial thing in a calendar year: what titles we were obsessed with the most. Without further ado:
Horizon Zero Dawn
"Is it impossible to pick just one?"
"It’s not my personal ranking."
In the mobile realm, her go-to has been Cityscapes and "attempting to locate adequate healthcare."
"In the game?"
"In the actual world."
Overwatch
"I refuse to play games on my phone." He seemed insulted that I even asked. I respect that.
Resident Evil Biohazard
She is trying to get into drama school, but when she took a break from vocals, she was immersed in Resident Evil. She also went on in great detail about her accomplishments on The Sims, where her character has a thriving utopia with infinitely better healthcare than her older sibling has in real life.
Crash Bandicoot: It’s About Time
She started the year at 60% completion and finished the year at 82%. It’s a marathon not a sprint for her. On her phone: something called Woodle, where you have to unscrew pins.
Minecraft
Whenever I see my adult son playing Minecraft, I set about him like a cross between a classic comedy bit. When he protests, I reply that I am doing this to toughen him up so he can mature and play games for mature audiences. It's a classic Scottish father/son relationship.
Eldest Daughter on Just Dance 2024
There was no contest for this one. She is unstoppable. More impressive than I was at my peak gaming days in my prime.
Marvel Snap
It was in a league of its own to the hours I spent on this exceptionally well-crafted strategy wizard’s poker, with its constantly evolving range of cards and game variations.
Marvel Snap
The worst thing about games that frequently update their range is you eventually realize and see it is all just an attempt to suck you into fear-of-missing-out driven microtransactions. So enjoyment soured halfway through the year and it was deleted.
Doom: The Dark Ages
Stunning reinvention of a iconic franchise. Captivating atmosphere from the beginning. I wish I could deal with my problems so effectively in real life.
Blue Prince
I decline to rush this gorgeous, distinctive game and I just lacked the focused attention to give it what it required earlier this year. With holiday guests over the festive period, I will be playing this in the wee small hours after family time.
Balatro
I'm aware Balatro was the previous year's sleeper hit, but I was late to it. And it is exceptional. It just gets every single thing right. Its gameplay loop is a brilliant concept, but the abilities behind the different special cards are so imaginative it has become a game I would happily play constantly. Combine that with the cleverness of the card design, and this is an true pinnacle of gaming. I fantasize about being stuck in a elevator for hours just so I have the perfect excuse but play it.
Outer Worlds 2
I endured a minor pile-on when I critiqued how a technical issue in another game damaged the experience for me, but that other title is still a colossal gaming achievement in terms of overall polish – which I recognized even more after slogging through Outer Worlds 2. So my appreciation goes out to the individual who took the time to send a message to say that my Outer Worlds 2 review was "bitter, confused resentment". I present that as written, because I appreciate the effort, and they are obviously an sharp judge of character.
Hollow Knight: Silksong
Sure. Give me a punishingly tough non-linear thing and provide little guidance on what I am supposed to be doing, except "figure it out". Great fun. I acknowledge that it looks ace and is ideal if you are into challenging games, but I cannot think of a gaming experience I am less interested in in my current stage of life. I was around back when many games were like this, and I'm over it. It was acceptable when I was a kid, but the same could be said for many less comfortable things.
Close call between corporate partnerships that sparked debate, and premium pricing. Both morally indefensible and unpleasant.
Clair Obscur, Despelote and Bananza would all be unique names bellowed from the garden at tea time.
Right Thumb Joint. No joke. I don’t know if it’s because of button mashing or doomscrolling, but it burns like hellfire in the mornings now. I knew I should have got my thumbs protected back in the 90s.
Grand Theft Auto VI.
And it will come out in 2026, even if we have to stretch time until the cows come home.
The Witcher 4.
