Van de Ven Brace Halts Everton's Run at Brand New Home Ground

Micky van de Ven found the net on two occasions as Spurs extended their winning streak in away games in the top division and handed the Toffees their initial loss at their new home.

Everton were undefeated in their five previous fixtures at their new ground at the dockside location, having left Goodison Park behind after 133 years at the conclusion of the previous campaign.

But Tottenham's leader Van de Ven struck on two occasions from set-pieces in the first half to place their strong form at risk, and they were unable to mount a comeback before Pape Matar Sarr - set up by former Toffees attacker Richarlison - nodded in a third to seal the victory.

The Everton defender thought he had levelled the scores a short while after Van de Ven's opener, glancing a powerful header past the Spurs keeper from an Everton corner.

The Portuguese striker, meanwhile, missed a number of chances, while the Italian goalkeeper made a succession of excellent stops to ensure Tottenham went five matches on the road without defeat in the Premier League.

But the VAR intervened, advising the match official to check the goal on the screen and the official ruled that Jack Grealish and Iliman Ndiaye were in an illegal position and had interfered with the Tottenham goalkeeper.

The win moves Thomas Frank's side into third place in the Premier League, five points off north London rivals and leaders Arsenal.

The Merseyside club remain 14th and are half a dozen points clear of the relegation zone.

Tottenham analysis: The defender fulfils role at each end of the field

Following a uninspiring midweek display in the European competition against Monaco, where they mustered a mere attempts on target, Frank opted for Randal Kolo Muani in attack instead of former Toffees player Richarlison.

The new arrival was failed to make much of an impact before being substituted for the substitute after 60 minutes on the pitch, but it emerged he proved unnecessary in the final outcome.

Defender the Dutchman converted into an attacking force to be feared.

Tottenham's opening strike came from a well-worked corner routine, with the midfielder directing the ball toward the six-yard box for an free Van de Ven to score.

And the captain - filling in as captain in Cristian Romero's absence - notched his next goal in first-half stoppage time as he outjumped the England keeper to nod in.

The Dutchman was equally outstanding in defensive duties, partnering well with Kevin Danso as the duo handled excellently with the numerous deliveries thrown their way by Everton.

Toffees breakdown: Everton lacking finishing touch

The club's new home had been a happy hunting ground, but it seems the freshness may have worn off slightly and fans flocked to the exits after the midfielder's final goal for Spurs.

The break in the team's winning streak at home will not be a major worry for David Moyes, but their attacking woes are.

Beto and the other striker - the Everton's two recognised strikers - had scored only a single goal between them before the weekend's outing.

And they were unable to contribute to that miserable tally on a damp and dreary evening on in Liverpool.

Beto's performance was summed up when he chose to bicycle-kick a golden opportunity from close range, even with having room and opportunity to readjust for a simpler shot that would have tested Vicario.

The substitute, as well, failed to make an impact after coming on for the starter in the second half.

It wasn't for a lack of chance. Most of Everton's attacks came through the winger and the forward, who tirelessly whipped threatening balls into the Tottenham box.
